Important Course Information

We will need to schedule three half-hour meetings, which will be held during weeks one, three, and five. We can do this by phone if it would be more convenient for you. Please let me know as soon as possible what the most convenient schedule would be for you, as mine is fairly flexible.

All work must be submitted by the end of the week for which it is due. This course can take no longer than five weeks from start to finish, so late work will not be accepted or reviewed. This reflects the accelerated and independent nature of directed study, and is an absolute requirement for this class.

However, it is perfectly acceptable to “get ahead” in the work. For example, if you wanted to do the work for weeks one and two during week one, that would be fine. Essentially, I will let you work as quickly as you want to, but can’t let you take longer than any given week to do the work associated with that week on this page. Failure to submit work on time will result in an immediate termination of the course and the student will be assigned an X grade.

That may sound quite harsh, but there should be ample opportunity to complete the work as it is described below. Also, we can discuss which start date you would like to use for this five-week course, as there is some (limited) flexibility for this.

What follows is a listing of the basic work you will need to accomplish. All course work must be e-mailed to me directly at crowleya@husson.edu. After the listing of basic work, you will find the policy and procedure sheet for the course, which you should read before you begin working on the class. It is essentially a contract between us that lets you know what you can expect from me, and let’s me know what I can expect from you.

I will respond to your journal writing with brief audio recordings that will be e-mailed to your first class account.

I will respond to your drafts of the research paper with both audio recordings and written comments on your electronic draft.

Best of luck, and let me know if you need any extra help. It will be normal to have questions along the way, and do not be afraid to ask.

Begin work on Research Paper (draft due at the end of NEXT week, week 4):

Your short research paper will be 4-5 pages in length.

It will offer a literary argument. The paper will need to follow MLA conventions, and have at least four secondary sources.

The paper must follow the basic format of a research paper: i.e MLA citation, correct font size, and appropriate sentence and paragraph structure.

There are a few aspects to paper writing that I want to mention to you now, as you may or may not have heard them before.

Quotes: When we quote or paraphrase from a source, there is a three step process we ALWAYS follow. First, we introduce the material — let the reader know where it is coming from. Next, we present the material, and, finally, we EXPLAIN in our own words how the material supports our thesis.

Heavy Proofreading is expected.

Week Four

Journal Responses 50 %

Research Paper 50%

Grading Policies:

All assignments will be graded on a standard letter-grade scale.

The student must complete all assignments to pass the course.

All papers must be typed.

An act of plagiarism or other forms of cheating will result in an F for the course grade.

Students MUST contact the instructor prior to the due date of an assignment if they have any problems with the assignment.

Academic Integrity:

Simply put, I will absolutely flunk you for plagiarism. Academic honesty is expected of all students. Any work that is not the student’s own is a violation of Husson University policy and of the student’s own integrity. Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. The penalty for cheating or plagiarism will be failure of the course. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Copying from another student’s papers, quizzes, exams or reports

Copying sections from books or articles or any other source without proper citations.

Allowing work to be copied by another student

Turning in work from another class.

Written Work Preparation:

Students’ papers should meet the following guidelines:

ALL work should be typed

Font size should be 12

Margins should be 1″ (do not justify the right margin)

Text should all be double spaced

First page should include students’ name and assignment identification

Citations to material must be in MLA Style

GRADING SYSTEM:

The system of evaluating a student’s achievement at Husson is by letter grade with the following percentage equivalents:

A 95-100 C 73-76

A- 90-94 C- 70-72
